With the popularity of recent romantic movies like, 365 Days: This Day and Through My Window, viewers can’t seem to get enough of love. Fans are constantly anticipating a light rom com or romantic movie to believe in love again. But, fans can also appreciate older classics.

Ultimately, the romance genre has many layers and some fans of romantic films may enjoy something a little different. There are a few decent romantic films with unconventional and unique premises. These films take the romantic nature of the film and turn around with unique perspectives.

Age Of Adeline (2015)

The story follows her life and how she manages to keep her identity from being exposed. She loses out on her relationship with her aging daughter and suffers to find a romantic partner that won’t out live her.

Despite the film’s unique premise, the audience can sympathize with the fact that Adeline is alone and has been for decades and the dynamic between her and her family creates interesting layers of tension.

Lars And The Real Girl (2007)

Ryan Gosling stars as Lars Lindstrom. He is an extremely shy and awkward man who decides to introduce his new girlfriend to his brother and sister-in-law. They are shocked when his new girlfriend is in fact a life-size doll.

Lars And The Real Girl is unconventional yet charming. While Lars’s brother and sister-in-law try to figure out if he’s doing okay, Lars begins to grow more outgoing and happier. This is one of the roles fans of Ryan Gosling might have forgotten about. However, fans of romantic films should look past the potentially offputting premise and enjoy this surprisingly heartfelt story.

Only You (1994)

This is another film that explores the chances people take to fulfill their happiness, or at least the possibility of finding some level of joy. Only You has a unique premise, but it’s upbeat and tries to be realistic about the choices people can make when it comes to love.

The Big Sick (2017)

The Big Sick explores the relationship between Kumail and Emily and how they deal with the fact that Kumail’s family expects him to have an arranged marriage. As they struggle with the realistic ups and downs of their modern love, Emily comes down with a mysterious illness that leaves her in a coma.

Kumail grows closer to her family and falls more in love with her. The Big Sick is interesting to watch as Emily is unconscious for a significant portion of the run time. The movie wrestles with questions of romantic expectations and reality in a way that is more blunt and down-to-earth than many other movies in the genre. The film takes a seemingly average man and makes him fall in love with an inanimate object. It is unique to watch their seemingly mutual connection grow, and overall, the audience is left to wonder about Theodore and his loneliness. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind centers around Clementine and Joel. Clementine has undergone a special procedure that makes her forget her memories of her boyfriend, Joel. However, Joel decides to do the same thing.

There are happy moments that the couple experiences, along with pain, and the two learn a lot about themselves in the process. While stories of lost love and memories aren’t rare, the way that the movie pulls the audience so literally into the minds of the characters makes it stand out in the genre.
